#TUHackathon - Students, Startups and Marketing Professionals

Posted by Victor Vo on May 3, 2016

Digital Creative Institute hackathonSaturday April 23 was the 2nd ever Digital Marketing Hackathon - and just like the first one, it was filled with students, startups and local San Antonio marketers! This time DCI partnered with Alpha Kappa Psi, co-ed business fraternity of Trinity University, to teach students about the field of digital marketing. Watch the recap video below to learn more! Teams of 5 to 7 students came together and created entire marketing campaigns for three local companies: Rising Barn, VentureLab and Sirius Computer Solutions.

So, what exactly is a Digital Marketing Hackathon?

It’s an exciting one day event where students collaborate in teams to create a full digital content strategy for a real company. Each team creates a buyer persona, content offering, content promotion strategy, and measurement plan. Then, they pitch their campaign to selected judges. The winning team is chosen based on overall strategy, creativity, and ability to execute.hackathon group table

The featured speakers were:

Sara Helmy, Founder of Tribu - spoke about buyer personas and content creation

“Inbound marketing is all about empathy. You have to give to get.”

Ruby Ong, Marketing at Sirius Solutions - spoke about content promotion

“If you market to everyone, you market to no one.”

Ryan Kelly, Founder of Pear Analytics - spoke about campaign success and analytics

“Setting up goals and event and tagging campaigns - if you set these up you will be able to measure lots of things.”

DCI apprentices from the first cohort came to lend their support and coach the students through the entire campaign creation process. “Coaching the Hackathon benefitted me by putting into perspective what inbound marketing means to people who are not in the industry, as many of the students in my group were not marketing majors.” - Marc Cunningham, DCI Apprentice and Inbound Marketing Consultant

At the end of the day, all 5 teams created a strategy for their company and one team was crowned the winner!

“As a firm believer in the effectiveness of learning by doing, it was exciting to support these students as they immersed themselves in developing real-world campaigns. For some of the participants, the Hackathon experience launched them in a new direction and will transform their entire career trajectory.” - Brad Voeller, founder of Digital Creative Institute
